ACTiVHOS™

In an effort to promote health and wellness and address the chronic conditions associated with obesity, a group of caregivers at Cleveland Clinic teamed up to create ACTiVHOS, an innovative 6-to-8 week bilingual/bicultural wellness program for Hispanic youth.

ACTiVHOS (which stands for Activity, Cognitive Therapy, Incentives in Health Outreach for Students) encourages youth to be physically active and adopt healthy behaviors by integrating fun, educational dialogues and fitness activities with incentive-based awards and prizes.

The program is fully bilingual (Spanish) and was IRB-approved to evaluate program outcomes. The program consists of:

  • Parent orientation and engagement
  • 90-minute weekly curriculum that incorporates physical fitness, health education, and nutrition programming
  • Weekly tracking of physical activity
  • Health journal tracking
  • Weekly incentivized individual and team challenges

The ACTiVHOS model provides the following benefits:

  • Culturally and linguistically relevant programming that reinforces program engagement
  • Promotes healthy lifestyles in young children and their families
  • Increased health literacy
  • Incorporates family centeredness into health and wellness
  • Incentivized rewards that promote behavior changes
  • Higher pediatric patient trust
  • Reduce bullying propensity
  • Provides education on healthy weight, asthma, and diabetes risks within the population

ACTiVHOS was originally designed as a summer camp curriculum – but now, with your help, we are ready to take it to the next level.

Our vision is to bring the program from a camp-based initiative to a school-based setting. This would allow us to extend the length of the program and also increase our student reach. For 2018, we have partnered with Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s International Newcomers Academy at Thomas Jefferson to integrate the program into the school day. ACTiVHOS will be taught in one 5th grade classroom to 35 students.

It is well-known that childhood obesity has become a major problem in United States. But did you know that Hispanic children in the U.S. ages 6-11 have the highest obesity rates, at 26.1%? (For white children that number is 13.1% and for African American children, it is 23.8%.)

Did you also know that low income and minority youth are disproportionately less active, more overweight and more likely to develop asthma than their high-income or white peers?

Together, we can help our community’s children and prevent chronic health issues from developing early in their lives. We can teach them lifelong lessons and give them a strong foundation of confidence, knowledge, and support.

Please consider giving what you can to this worthy cause – the children thank you!
